INTERACTIVE/INSTALLATION/SETTING THE STAGES

Echo Chamber is the first step on a multi-year journey exploring intimate, one-on-one sound and touch based immersive performance projects. Echo Chamber examines the relationship between spectatorship and empathy. Contemporary life and culture is saturated with images. From selfies and Snapchats to eyewitness uploads of war and terror – the visual brings us together. Intimate and collective moments alike are broadcast to the world, resulting in a false sense of understanding and interconnection. By removing the visual, and our inherent textual understanding of familiar images, we aim to bring participants closer to a raw, emotional, physiological and psychological experience. Seeing might be believing, but just because we’ve “seen” it – doesn’t mean we “understand”.

PERFORMANCE/SETTING THE STAGES

After a spectacular birth at the infamous Earlwood Farm Christmas Climate Change Variety Hour, Emma McManus and Maria White’s new collaboration ‘TOO RUDE’ (a name inspired by the Daily Telegraph’s propaganda errrr… response to the Variety Hour) have created a new performance about the uncomfortable role that artists play in gentrification. Pop up galleries ‘renewing’ neighbourhoods, local councils encouraging urban ‘rejuvenation’ through culture, and artists no longer being able to afford to live in the inner city. What a tricky predicament we find ourselves in! Drawing on disillusionment with the state of arts funding in Australia, the persistent dismantling of public services, grand narratives of art history, and adding their own feminist chutzpah, McManus and White will unravel the terrible formula: art (plus) city (equals) gentrification
