The White Spirit Cult had its first manifestation in Iceland before moving through Sydney to Newcastle. It shifts between form and location in an ever-changing investigation into how we can confront Taboo. This work builds on the hypothesis that all forms of Taboo (legal, social, economic) actively hold women back. It consciously seeks ways to emancipate women from obstacles which stop female experiences and needs from being voiced and heard in the public sphere.

The project began by asking women of all ages and backgrounds about the presence of shame and purity in their lives. Their stories are the material through which this work is devised. This work explores relationships with others, but also the relationship between our own mind and body. Sexuality, menstruation, body dysmorphia, and caregiving are all explored in this work.

Content note: this show contains discussion of sex and sexual assault.
